MADISON – The public will have an opportunity to learn more about a revised draft water level order for Lake Koshkonong and submit written or oral comments on the draft at a public informational hearing to be held June 22 in Edgerton.
The Rock Koshkonong Lake District filed a petition with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in April 2003 to amend the effective water level order for Lake Koshkonong, which is held by the Indianford Dam. The DNR issued its decision and order to grant only a portion of the petition by reducing the winter drawdown, but the order did not grant higher water levels for the months of May through October.
The order was challenged and worked its way through the court system. Since then, negotiations have taken place that resulted in the DNR issuing a revised draft water level order. The department has preliminarily determined that the draft water level order complies with s. 31.02(1), Wis. Stats., which requires the department to consider public rights in navigable waters, safety, and the protection of life, health, property, property values and economic values.
The public can review the draft water level order by searching the DNR website, dnr.wi.gov, for keywords Indianford Dam.
The public informational hearing will be held June 22, 2017 from 5-8 p.m. at the Edgerton High School Performing Arts Center located at 200 Elm High Drive, Edgerton, Wis.
Comments may also be submitted by email to DNRKOSHKONONGWATERLEVELS@Wisconsin.gov or writing to Wisconsin DNR, Attn: Rob Davis, 3911 Fish Hatchery Road, Fitchburg, WI 53711 by U.S. mail. Comments should include Docket Number IP-SC-2015-54-02457 or project name. The department will consider comments related to public rights in navigable waters, safety, and the protection of life, health, property, property values, and economic values in making its final decision under s. 31.02(1), Wis. Stats. Comments must be received no later June 27, 2017.
